Coming to a new country, meeting new people and adjusting to a different school environment can feel like a big step, especially when you're doing it on your own.
For Sebastian, a short-term exchange student from Colombia, his two months at TAIE International Institute turned out to be an experience he will always remember.
When Sebastian first arrived in Canada, he was feeling nervous and wasn't quite sure what to expect. Being in a new environment meant getting used to a different culture, meeting people from around the world and communicating in English every day.
But it didn't take long for things to change.
With the support of the TAIE community, Sebastian gradually stepped out of his comfort zone, made new friends and became more comfortable expressing himself. What started as a nervous first day soon turned into an exciting experience filled with new connections and opportunities.
One thing Sebastian particularly enjoyed about studying at TAIE was the flexibility of its academic program.
Instead of taking on too many subjects at once, students have the opportunity to focus on two subjects during each two-month term. This allowed Sebastian to concentrate on his studies while making time to enjoy everything happening around him.
Beyond the classroom, he also had plenty of opportunities to practise his English in everyday conversations, helping him become much more confident communicating with others.
For Sebastian, one of the best parts of his exchange experience was the friendships he made along the way.
At TAIE, he met students from different parts of the world, including Vietnam, Mexico, Colombia and Korea. Getting to know people from different backgrounds gave him the chance to learn about new cultures, share experiences and become more outgoing.
Looking back, Sebastian feels that he has grown both personally and socially during his time in Canada. He is now more confident speaking English, more comfortable meeting new people and more willing to step outside his comfort zone.
Perhaps the most heartwarming part of Sebastian's interview was his answer when asked how he felt about going home.
"Honestly, I don't want to go back home. I love it here!"
His parents are also happy to see how much he has enjoyed his time in Canada.
Two months may seem like a short time, but Sebastian's experience shows that studying abroad is about so much more than attending classes. It's about discovering new
interests, building friendships, gaining confidence and seeing the world from a different perspective.
At TAIE, we are proud to be part of these journeys and look forward to seeing where Sebastian's next adventure takes him!
