TAIE Programs: English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
Offered Jointly by the University of Alberta and TAIE International Institute

The program consists two courses (140, 145) offered jointly by University of Alberta and TAIE International Institute. It was designed to meet the needs of students who plan to go to university and need a practical and useful alternative to writing the TOEFL. These two courses will take about three months and enable students, who have passed the two courses, to enter the University of Alberta with the exemption of TOEFL score requirement.

Purpose

The EAP program consists of two courses (ESL140, 145) offered jointly by University of Alberta and TAIE International Institute, which are designed to meet the needs of students who plan to go to university but have no time to prepare for writing the TOEFL. These two courses will take four months to complete and will enable students, who have passed the two EAP courses, to enter the University of Alberta with the TOEFL score requirement exempted. Admission into the EAP program is contingent upon having met all other admission requirements for the University of Alberta.

Course hours and duration

Each course takes 132 hours. The classes will take 3 1/2 hours a day, five days a week. The duration of the two courses will be two semesters (15 weeks).

Course Time

ESL 140 and ESL 145 are offered in turns, one course each semester.

Prerequisites for EAP and eligibility

  • Completion of ENG 4U (English 4U must be completed with the Ontario Curriculum - no course equivalents from home countries will be accepted).
  • EAP admission test (If students fail the entrance examination, the registration fee will be refunded.)

Letter of Acceptance

Acceptance into the EAP program indicates that the student is qualified to be admitted into the University of Alberta upon successful completion of the program. TAIE will help students submit an application for admission and a letter of conditional admission from the U of A will be issued after the application has been reviewed. The conditions of admission will be clearly stated on the letter, which will include:
1. Successful completion of the EAP program (ESL 140 & 145)
2. Five required subjects with a competitive admission average

Registration

  1. Time for Entrance Test: 20 days before semester starts.
  2. The courses are subject to cancellation if the enrollment is less than 10. If this happens, students' payment will refund completely.

Location

Courses will be offered on the campus of TAIE International Institute
